Phuket’s low season runs from 20 May to 19 September. The island is exposed to the southwest monsoon during this stretch, and west coast beaches, including Surin and Bang Tao, usually get stronger waves and currents than in winter. No beach on the west coast is fully calm during this period: conditions vary day to day, so the flag on the beach matters more than the area’s reputation.

When is low season on Phuket

In rental pricing, low season is the period from 20 May to 19 September. It lines up with the southwest monsoon, which brings rain and swell from the open sea.

Why the west coast gets rougher waves then

The west coast beaches — Layan, Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata — face the Andaman Sea directly. The monsoon blows from that direction, so waves and currents pick up noticeably from May to September. In winter the same exposure works the other way, giving calmer water and weaker currents — which is why Phuket’s high season lines up with comfortable swimming, not just dry weather.

Which beaches are calmer in low season

There are no fully sheltered beaches on the west coast — it is an open stretch of coastline without bays. Calmer water is usually found on the island’s southeast side, in bays such as Chalong or Rawai: they face the Gulf of Thailand and are less exposed to the southwest monsoon. That is a different part of the island though, with different infrastructure and without the west coast’s sunsets, so for most people it is a separate trip rather than a substitute for the west coast.

What to check before swimming

A red flag on the beach means do not go into the water, and on the west coast it goes up more often during low season than in winter. This applies to any beach on the island, and it is worth checking every day rather than once on arrival — conditions can shift within the same week.

Why low season is also the cheapest season

Low season has an upside: it is the cheapest time to rent on the island. In the pricing for apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex, the lowest rate is from 990 THB per night and from 22,500 THB per month, and that is exactly the 20 May – 19 September period, for the Deluxe Pool View 40 m² category. For anyone willing to trade calm seas for a smaller budget and fewer tourists, it is a workable option — especially for longer stays, covered in more detail in Phuket apartments for a month.

Our area in low season

We manage apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex in Surin, on the west coast, about 750 metres from the beach. In low season it is the same beach as in winter, just with rougher water — but the complex has six pools on site, four on the roof and two with bars, so swimming does not depend on the sea. For a comparison of Surin with neighbouring Bang Tao, see Surin or Bang Tao; for an overview of all the west coast beaches, see Phuket’s west coast areas.

In short

Phuket’s low season runs from 20 May to 19 September. During this time the west coast, including Surin and Bang Tao, usually has stronger waves and currents than in winter, and no beach there is fully calm — check the flags, not the area. It is also the cheapest time to rent on the island.
