Surin Beach Phuket: how it changes by season and what is nearby
Surin Beach on the west coast of Phuket: what it looks like, how it differs in winter and summer, where to watch the sunset, and which beaches are nearby.

Surin Beach is one of the west-coast beaches of Phuket, known for its calm atmosphere and sunsets with no buildings on the waterfront. In winter, the high season, the sea here is usually calm; in summer, the low season, waves and current are stronger. Within a couple of kilometers there are several more beaches with different characters: Bang Tao, Pansea, Kamala.
What Surin Beach is like
Surin is a beach on the west coast of Phuket, facing the Andaman Sea. Unlike busier neighbors such as Patong, there is no dense development right at the waterline and no constant stream of street vendors — the beach has a reputation as calmer and quieter. It is not empty, but that is its reputation: people come here for calm, not nightlife.
We manage apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex near this beach and see it throughout the year — in winter, when the water is calm, and in summer, during the rainy months.
How Surin Beach changes by season
The main factor that shapes Surin Beach at any point in the year is the direction of the monsoon.
High season (September 20 – May 19). The monsoon blows from the other side of the island, so the sea along the west coast, including Surin, is usually calm during this period: weak current, low waves. This coincides with dry weather — a full breakdown of prices and months is in our article on Phuket high season by month.
Low season (May 20 – September 19). The southwest monsoon hits the west coast directly, and waves and current at Surin, like at neighboring beaches, increase noticeably. The beach is never fully calm during this period — the reference point is not the area’s reputation but the flags raised on the beach on any given day. More detail is in the article on which Phuket beaches are calmer in low season.
The seasonal difference is more noticeable at Surin than at the sheltered bays of the island’s southeast: the beach is open directly to the sea, without a bay to protect it.
Sunsets at Surin Beach
The beach faces west, into open sea, and the evening sun sets directly over the water — with no hills or buildings blocking the horizon. This is a general feature of the whole west coast of Phuket, and Surin is no exception: on a clear evening the sunset is visible from the waterline to the horizon.
The sunset looks best during the dry weather of high season, when the evening sky is more often clear. In the rainy months of low season, sunsets still happen, but noticeably less often, because of cloud cover.
What is near Surin Beach
Phuket’s west coast is a chain of beaches, and the neighboring ones are a short trip away. Distances from the Mida Grande Resort complex, where our apartments are, and from there to Surin Beach itself ≈ 750 meters:
| Beach | Distance from the complex |
|---|---|
| Bang Tao | 712 m |
| Surin | 769 m |
| Pansea | 912 m |
| Kamala | 1.7 km |
Bang Tao — the neighbor to the north, a longer and more developed beach with more tourist infrastructure. If you want a contrast — a calm Surin by day and a livelier Bang Tao in the evening — we compared the two in Surin or Bang Tao.
Pansea — a small beach between Surin and Bang Tao, also within walking distance.
Kamala — further south, 1.7 km, a resort area with a different, softer, more family-oriented atmosphere.
Staying near Surin Beach
From our apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex it is ≈ 750 meters to Surin Beach, a 12–15 minute walk — close enough to skip transport, but not beachfront with its noise and salt on everything. The complex has six pools, four of them on the roof, so swimming does not depend on the season or the sea conditions. More on who this area suits for staying — in the article Surin district: who it suits.
