North or South Phuket: Where to Stay
How the northern part of Phuket — the airport, Mai Khao, Layan, Bang Tao, Surin — differs from the south — Patong, Karon, Kata, Rawai. Which part suits which traveler and how it affects your choice of accommodation.

Short answer: northern Phuket covers the airport, Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Layan, Bang Tao, and Surin — quieter and closer to arrivals; the south is Patong, Karon, Kata, Rawai, and Phuket Town — denser and with a much livelier nightlife scene. If you are flying in with kids or staying for a long term and want a short ride from the airport, the north makes more sense; if nightlife, markets, and proximity to the old town matter most, the south usually wins.
How the north differs from the south
The island stretches from north to south, and the west coast — the main tourist strip — follows the same shape. The north was developed later than the south, so it is more spacious, with fewer dense tourist blocks, and it sits closest to the international airport. The south was built up earlier; its infrastructure is denser and more varied, but so is the traffic and the construction.
The practical consequence for accommodation: a drive across the whole island — from the far north to the far south and back — takes noticeably longer than moving between neighboring areas within the same part. Worth keeping in mind if you plan to combine staying in one part of the island with frequent trips to the other.
Who the north suits
The north includes Mai Khao and Nai Yang near the airport, Layan as the quietest of the major beaches in this part of the island, Bang Tao with developed resort infrastructure, and Surin in between. A breakdown by beach is in west coast areas of Phuket, and which one is quietest is covered in quietest areas of Phuket.
The north makes sense for those flying in with kids or older relatives who do not want a long ride right after landing, and for winter stays or remote work, where quiet and a predictable routine matter. A comparison of the two closest northern areas is in Surin or Bang Tao: where to stay.
Who the south suits
The south includes Patong, with the island’s highest density of bars and nightclubs, calmer Karon and Kata, Rawai and Nai Harn closer to Promthep Cape, and Phuket Town, with its markets and old architecture set back from the coast. Details on the loudest area are in Patong: who it suits and who should avoid it, and how Karon differs from Patong and Kata is in Karon beach.
The south suits those travelling primarily for nightlife, a variety of beaches close to one another, and proximity to Phuket Town’s city infrastructure — markets, hospitals, offices.
If you need both north and south
Fully combining the north’s quiet with the south’s energy in one location is not realistic — they are different parts of the island by character. A workable compromise is to stay in the north, where it is quieter and closer to the airport, and head south for a day or an evening when you want a change of scenery. For long-term living, this setup works better than the reverse: a predictable, quiet base plus occasional trips beats daily commutes between a loud area and a quiet one.
Our area
We manage apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex in Surin, in the north of the island, about 750 m (12–15 minutes on foot) from the beach. Bang Tao, with its restaurants and shops, is right next door, and the airport is noticeably closer than from the southern part of the island.
The complex grounds include six pools, a restaurant, a Starbucks cafe, two gyms, two kids’ playrooms, and a library-coworking space. Inside the apartments: a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine, and dedicated 300 Mbps internet.
One-bedroom options include Deluxe Pool View 40 m² and Deluxe Ocean View 40 m²; for a family, there is Family 2 Bedroom Ocean View 54 m².
