Phuket West Coast Areas: Layan, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata
An overview of the areas on Phuket's west coast — Layan, Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata. How they differ in character, who each one suits and how to choose an area for your trip.
Phuket’s west coast is a chain of beaches stretching from north to south. Almost everything people come to the island for is here: this is the side that faces the Andaman Sea, and this is where you see the sunsets that put Phuket on postcards.
But the areas in this chain are very different from one another. Let’s go through them in order, from north to south, so it is clear what you are actually choosing between.
A note on honesty up front: below we describe the general character of the areas. Specifics — prices, travel times, names of venues — we deliberately do not invent. We give exact figures only for our own property, because those are the ones we are accountable for.
Layan
The northernmost of the popular beaches in this part of the coast. Layan is about quiet and nature. There is noticeably less development here than in the central part of the coast, and less infrastructure as well.
Who it suits: those who are specifically after seclusion and are prepared for the fact that most things will require a trip.
Who it does not suit: those planning to get by without transport. In an area with little infrastructure, not having a bike or a car is a serious limitation.
Bang Tao
One of the longest beaches on the island and one of the most developed. A dense tourist infrastructure has formed here: many hotels, many venues, a lot going on.
Who it suits: those who want something happening around them; those coming for a week or two who want to fit a lot in; those who do not want to depend on transport — much of it is within walking distance.
Who it does not suit: those looking for quiet.

Surin
Bang Tao’s neighbour to the south, and an area with a different character — calm. Less tourist traffic, less noise.
This is where our apartments are, so for this area we can give exact figures. From the Mida Grande Resort complex:

To the beach — ≈ 750 metres, roughly 12–15 minutes on foot.
Who it suits: families with children, those coming for a month or longer, those who need a calm setting while keeping neighbouring areas accessible.
Who it does not suit: nightlife enthusiasts.
In detail: Surin district — who it suits.
Kamala
Further south, 1.7 km from our complex. Kamala is a resort area, but calmer in character than Patong, with noticeably more infrastructure than Layan.
Who it suits: those looking for the middle ground: somewhere to go, but without the feeling of a non-stop party. Families often choose it.
Who it does not suit: those who want either complete quiet or full-on activity — in both extreme cases there are areas that handle it better.
Patong
The best-known and noisiest area of Phuket. Patong is the island’s nightlife centre, with the highest density of entertainment, venues and tourists.
Who it suits: those who are coming precisely for that. If the plan is active evenings with everything within walking distance, Patong covers that better than the rest.
Who it does not suit: practically everyone else. Especially families with small children and those coming for a long stay to work. Noise that reads as atmosphere on a five-day holiday becomes a problem in the second month.
Karon
South of Patong. Karon is a large beach, and noticeably calmer than Patong. There is infrastructure, but the density of entertainment is lower.
Who it suits: those who want a large beach and developed infrastructure, but without Patong’s intensity.
Who it does not suit: those who need complete quiet.
Kata
Further south again, one of the island’s most popular family areas. Kata is traditionally seen as a calmer alternative to Patong with good infrastructure.
Who it suits: families, couples, those who want a balance between convenience and calm.
Who it does not suit: those looking for seclusion — Kata is popular, and you feel it.
How to choose: three questions
Instead of comparing areas on an abstract “better — worse” scale, answer three questions.
1. How long are you coming for?
This is the main question, and it changes the answer more than anything else.
Up to two weeks. The priority is experiences and minimal logistics. Areas with developed infrastructure work: Bang Tao, Kata, Karon, Patong.
A month and longer. The priority shifts to everyday living conditions. What starts to matter is not how many venues are around, but whether the accommodation has a kitchen, a washing machine and decent internet. The calm areas win: Surin, Kamala, Layan.

2. Who are you travelling with?
With children — calm areas and on-site facilities at the accommodation matter more than the area’s infrastructure. In detail: Phuket with kids.
As a couple — a matter of taste: both quiet and lively areas work.
With a group looking for an active holiday — Patong and its surroundings.
3. Will you have transport?
Public transport on Phuket is poorly developed. If you are not going to have a bike or a car, choose an area where what you need is within walking distance — or accommodation with facilities on site.
The second option is often underrated. If the complex has pools, gyms, a restaurant and a coworking space, the need to go out drops sharply. In our complex, for example, on site there are: 6 pools (4 on the roof, 2 with bars), a restaurant, a Starbucks cafe, a rooftop cafe, 2 gyms, 2 children’s playrooms, a library-coworking space, a garden lounge, 2 covered garages and parking next to the buildings.
Our option
We are not going to pretend we suit everyone. Our apartments are in Surin, and that is a choice in favour of a calm area on the border with Bang Tao.
What that gives you in practice: ≈ 750 metres to the beach, two beaches within walking distance, a quiet setting and resort facilities on site.
We manage 7 apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex, class 4+/5★, floors 1–9:
- one bedroom, 40–45 m²: Deluxe Pool View 40 m², Deluxe Ocean View 40 m², Deluxe Ocean View 45 m²;
- two bedrooms, 54–69 m²: Family 2 Bedroom 54 m², Grande 2 Bedroom Ocean View 69 m², Grande 2 Bedroom Jungle View 69 m², Grande Luxury 69 m².
All of them have a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine, dedicated high-speed internet, and TV with channels from more than 100 countries. Sea view or pool view.
