Surin or Kamala: which area to choose on Phuket
Surin and Kamala are neighbouring areas on Phuket west coast, but with a different character: a quiet residential area versus a beach village with a seafront promenade. The difference and who each suits.

Surin and Kamala are neighbouring areas on Phuket’s west coast, about 1.7 km apart. Surin is quieter and runs like a residential beach area, while Kamala is a former fishing village with a seafront promenade, cafes and shops. If you want quiet and a base for a long stay, Surin is closer; if you want to walk out to a promenade with food and shopping every day, Kamala fits better.
How close they really are
From our Mida Grande Resort complex in Surin, Kamala beach is 1.7 km away. For comparison, Surin beach is 769 m, Bang Tao is 712 m, and Pansea is 912 m. Kamala is not a neighbouring beach a few steps away — unlike Bang Tao or Pansea, which are within walking distance of our area, it is a short separate trip.
That changes the question: comparing Surin and Kamala is not about choosing between two beaches by the same house, but between two different bases for the trip.
How Surin differs
Surin is a quiet area, and that is its main feature — we cover it in detail in the Surin area: who it suits. There is less tourist traffic here and no dense development along the shore.
Our complex has 6 pools (4 on the roof, 2 with bars), a restaurant, a Starbucks cafe, 2 gyms, 2 kids’ playrooms and a coworking library. For a long stay, that covers a good part of everyday life on site.
How Kamala differs
Kamala grew out of a fishing village and still feels like one in places: low buildings, a school, a temple, a market, ordinary Thai life next to the tourist side. A seafront promenade with cafes and shops runs along the beach. A detailed look at the area is in Kamala beach: what the area is like.
That gives Kamala something quiet Surin lacks: ready walkable infrastructure — food, shopping, a walk along the sea without getting in a car.
Who Surin suits
- Anyone staying a month or longer: a kitchen, a washing machine and 300 Mbit/s dedicated internet in the apartments cover a lot of everyday logistics.
- Families with kids: a calm beach nearby, 2 kids’ playrooms and pools on site.
- Remote workers who value quiet over variety around them.
Who Kamala suits
- Anyone who wants to walk a seafront promenade with cafes and shops every day without planning a separate trip for it.
- Anyone who values a Thai village feel over resort-style development.
- Families who will use the proximity of Phuket FantaSea theme park — 2.4 km from our complex, and closer still from Kamala.
You don’t have to pick only one
You can stay in Surin and drive to Kamala whenever you want a change of scenery — the trip is short. The same logic applies to Bang Tao, covered in Surin or Bang Tao: where to stay.
We manage apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex in Surin: from the Deluxe Pool View 40 m² to the family-sized Family 2 Bedroom 54 m². Every apartment has a kitchen, a washing machine and 300 Mbit/s internet.
In short
Surin is quieter and closer to our apartments: 769 m to the beach and ready infrastructure on site. Kamala is 1.7 km away — a separate short trip, but with a promenade, cafes and a village feel. For a long, quiet stay Surin is closer; for daily walks along a promenade, Kamala fits better — and one doesn’t rule out the other.
