The Surin Area in Phuket: Who It Suits and What Is Nearby
A look at the Surin area on the west coast of Phuket: what the beach is like, which beaches are nearby, who the area suits for a holiday and for long-term stays, and who would be better off choosing somewhere else.
When someone plans a trip to Phuket for the first time, they usually choose not the island but the area. The island is small, but its areas differ in character, and just about everything depends on that choice: whether you will hear music from a bar or the sound of the sea in the evening, whether you will need a bike for every grocery run, whether your child will have somewhere to go when it rains.
We manage apartments in Surin and we see who comes here and who then extends their booking. So we will describe the area honestly — including who it will not suit.
Where Surin is located
Surin is an area on the west coast of Phuket. The west coast is the side of the island facing the Andaman Sea, and almost all of Phuket’s well-known beaches are here, lined up in a chain from north to south.
Surin sits in the middle part of this chain. The practical consequence: the neighbouring beaches are not “on the other side of the island” but within a short trip.

From the complex to the beach it is ≈ 750 metres, roughly 12–15 minutes on foot. That figure matters, and here is why.
Why ≈ 750 metres is a matter of principle
There is a big difference between “accommodation by the sea” and “accommodation you have to travel to the sea from”.
When the beach is ≈ 750 metres away, going to the sea requires no planning. You do not need to call transport, you do not need to agree on who is driving the bike today, you do not need to decide whether the trip is worth a half-hour swim. You simply step out and walk.
When the beach is 3–4 kilometres away — and that is the case with many listings that still call themselves “close to the beach” — the mode changes. The beach turns into a half-day undertaking. For a week-long holiday that may not matter. For a month-long trip the difference accumulates.
At the same time, ≈ 750 metres is not beachfront either. Beachfront means noise, humidity, salt on everything, and the price. A middle distance of a few hundred metres often turns out to be a sensible compromise.
How Surin differs from its neighbours
The west coast is very varied, and neighbouring areas offer a different holiday scenario.
Bang Tao is the neighbour to the north, less than a kilometre away. The beach is longer and noticeably more developed: there is more tourist infrastructure around. Pansea is a small beach between Surin and Bang Tao, less than a kilometre from the complex.
Kamala is further south, 1.7 km away. Also a resort area, but with a different mood.
Surin itself is a comparatively quiet part of the coast. This is its main quality, and everything else follows from it: both who it suits and who it does not.
Who Surin suits
Those coming for a long stay. This is probably the main category. When a trip is measured not in days but in weeks and months, everyday factors start to matter more than impressions. You need a place where you can cook a proper breakfast, do the laundry, and work without the connection dropping in the middle of a call.
That is why our apartments have a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine, a dedicated high-speed internet connection, and a TV with channels from more than 100 countries. And on the grounds of the complex there is a library-coworking space, that is, a place you can go to work away from your apartment.
Families with children. A quiet area plus the gated grounds of the complex is what parents usually look for. On the grounds there are 6 swimming pools, 4 of them on the roof, and 2 children’s playrooms, while the Phuket FantaSea theme park is 2.4 km away. Those who want to combine quiet with accessibility. Surin is quiet, but the neighbouring beaches and their infrastructure are nearby. You do not have to choose between “quiet” and “far from everything”.
Those who value on-site infrastructure. The complex has a restaurant, a Starbucks cafe, a rooftop cafe, 2 gyms, a garden lounge, 2 covered garages, and parking next to the buildings. On some days you may not need to leave the grounds at all — and it will not feel like a compromise.
Who Surin most likely will not suit
We will say it plainly, because a mismatch of expectations spoils a trip more than any shortcoming of the accommodation.
Those coming for nightlife. If the plan is clubs, bars, and action until morning every evening, Surin is not the right area. The calm that some people choose it for will feel like boredom to others.
Those who want to step out of the door straight onto the sand. ≈ 750 metres is close, but it is not beachfront. If your criterion is “open the door and there is the sea”, you need a different format of accommodation.
Those looking for the cheapest option. The west coast is not the most budget-friendly part of the island overall. If the main criterion is the lowest price, it is worth looking inland.
What about transport
A separate question worth thinking through in advance. Distances in Phuket are short, but public transport is poorly developed, so most visitors either get a bike or use taxis.
For an area with the beach ≈ 750 metres away and infrastructure on the grounds of the complex, the need for transport is lower than usual: you can walk to the shops and to the sea. But for trips around the island you still need transport.
The complex has 2 covered garages and parking next to the buildings — if you plan to rent a car, there is space for it.
How the accommodation works here
In the Mida Grande Resort complex we manage 7 apartments. It is a 4+/5★ class apart-resort, with buildings of up to 9 floors.
Options:
- One bedroom, 40–45 m² — for a couple or a couple with a child. Deluxe Ocean View 40 m², Deluxe Ocean View 45 m², and Deluxe Pool View 40 m².
- Two bedrooms, 54–69 m² — for a family or two couples: two bedrooms and two bathrooms. For example, Family 2 Bedroom 54 m² and Grande 2 Bedroom Ocean View 69 m².
The view is either of the sea or of the pool. There is usually a price difference between them, and everyone decides for themselves whether the view is worth paying extra for: if you plan to spend a lot of time in the apartment, the view works every day, not only on the day you arrive.

Short conclusion
Surin is an area for those who need a quiet place on the west coast with the beach within walking distance, but without being cut off from the rest of the island. It works particularly well for long trips, when everyday comfort matters more than tourist impressions, and for trips with children.
