Kamala Beach on Phuket: what the area is like and who it suits
Kamala is Patong quiet neighbour: a village, a long beach, a seafront road. What the area is really like, who it fits and who it does not, and how to stay nearby without choosing between Kamala and Surin.
Kamala sits on Phuket’s west coast between Patong and Surin, and that position explains most of its character. People move here from Patong for the quiet, and from Layan for the shops. Here is what that means in practice and who the balance suits.
What kind of place it is
Kamala grew out of a fishing village and still feels like one in places: low buildings, a school, a temple, a market, ordinary Thai life mixed with the tourist side. A seafront road runs along the beach with cafes and shops; residential streets sit behind it.
The beach is long and fairly wide, with sand and an easy entry into the water along most of it. The northern end is calmer; closer to the centre there are more people, more sun loungers and more places to eat.
Who it suits
- Anyone who finds Patong loud and Layan empty. Kamala has places to eat and shop, but no nightlife strip and no constant traffic.
- Families. A flat beach, an unhurried pace, and the Phuket FantaSea theme park nearby — 2.4 km from our complex.
- Long stays. When you live somewhere for a month, a shop, a pharmacy and quiet nights matter more than three bars within walking distance.
Who it does not suit
Anyone coming for nightlife: that is Patong, and it is more honest to stay there from the start. And anyone after complete solitude — Kamala is not an empty beach, and in high season it gets busy.
Seasonality is the same along the whole west coast: from May to October the swell and currents arrive, and you swim by the flags. That applies to Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao alike.
You do not have to pick one beach
The west coast is compact: neighbouring beaches are a short drive apart, sometimes less. From our apartments it is 1.7 km to Kamala, about 750 m to Surin and a little over 700 m to Bang Tao. So you can stay in one place and visit three beaches depending on your mood and the waves.

In short
Kamala is the middle of the scale: quieter than Patong, livelier than Layan, with everyday infrastructure and a long beach. It suits families and long stays. It does not suit anyone who needs nightlife or complete solitude.
