Do you need a scooter in Phuket: when you can manage without one

A scooter in Phuket is not for everyone — it depends on whether the beach and daily errands are within walking distance. When you can skip it, and when it is nearly essential.

A scooter in Phuket is not necessary for everyone — it depends on where you stay. If your accommodation is within walking distance of the beach and daily errands, like the apartments in the Mida Grande Resort complex near Surin Beach (≈ 750 m, a 12–15 minute walk), a scooter is optional and only useful for occasional trips further out. If your stay is away from the beach and shops, a scooter or taxi becomes the main way to get anywhere — public transport on the island is poorly developed.

When you can manage without a scooter

You can realistically skip a scooter if everything you need is within walking distance. That is the case at our complex: Surin Beach is ≈ 750 m away, Bang Tao is 712 m — both a 12–15 minute walk. For more on what is nearby and how Surin compares to neighbouring areas, see Surin district, Phuket. If you are not planning to travel beyond the nearest beaches and restaurants, renting a scooter is an avoidable expense.

When a scooter is nearly essential

A scooter matters once you want to see the island beyond one area. From our complex, Pansea Beach is 912 m away and Kamala is already 1.7 km — still walkable, but beyond that distances favour a scooter or taxi over a walk: Phuket FantaSea theme park is 2.4 km away. A scooter is close to essential for anyone staying in areas with less developed infrastructure, such as Layan, where getting to most things means driving (more in Layan Beach: Surin’s quiet neighbour). How walkable different west-coast areas are is compared in Phuket west coast areas.

Options without a scooter

  • Walking — works if your stay is near the beach and shops, as at our Surin complex.
  • Beach shuttle — our complex runs its own shuttle to the beach, 300 THB round trip: an option for anyone who does not want to walk in the heat but also does not plan to rent a scooter.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing apps — available across the island and suit one-off trips beyond walking distance, without renting a scooter for the whole stay.

Is a scooter worth renting just in case

If you already know you will spend your whole stay within walking distance of the beach and daily errands — as in Surin — renting a scooter for the whole trip is not worth it: occasional taxis or the beach shuttle work out cheaper. A scooter pays off if you plan to visit other beaches and areas of the island often, or if you are staying somewhere with little within walking distance. Traffic in Phuket drives on the left, and roads are sometimes narrow with sharp bends — without confident scooter experience, a taxi is the simpler choice for occasional longer trips.

In short

A scooter in Phuket is not essential for everyone — it comes down to where you stay. At the Mida Grande Resort complex in Surin, the beach and nearest shops are within walking distance, so a scooter mainly matters for trips to farther beaches like Kamala or to Phuket FantaSea, while the shuttle or a taxi covers shorter distances. We manage apartments of several sizes — from the compact Deluxe Pool View 40 m² to the family-sized Family 2 Bedroom 54 m² — and can tell you what transport you will actually need for your trip.

Message us on Telegram @MidaGrandePhuket24 — we will tell you what is within walking distance of specific apartments and whether you will need a scooter for your plans.
